PfP’s Essex County Council for Young Children (ECCYC) got off to a good start this year with a plan to encourage parents to improve their child’s literacy. ECCYC recruited 125 parents to commit to reading with their children. Books were donated by Scholastic and United Way of Greater Newark. Parents submitted videos and photographs of their time reading with their children that were shared at PfP’s Week of the Young Child Breakfast. Plans are underway for ECCYC’s Family Fun Day to be held on Saturday, June 25 at Military Park in downtown Newark. Over 30 community partners have been invited to host resource tables of information for families including health screenings. There will be lawn games, face painting, a photo booth, a magician, arts and crafts, raffles every half hour, and free food for all. This event was planned and designed “for parents by parents”.  An invitation is open for county-wide service providers to host resource tables with information and/or family activities.
